Officially Thanking Melee

Roy Vs Marth

So ok, yeah, it’s been ten billion years since Super Smash Bros. Melee came out. I mean we’re gonna have a new Smash Bros in 2015 (yeah, lol, definitely don’t expect it in 2014). I’ll make a decent attempt to go into Brawl at some point. So let’s go back in time…back to around 2001…well for me somewhere in January…and the part where I ended up meeting some blue haired dude with a sword and looked like a girl…

Because once that moment happened, I became a Fire Emblem fan. No, of course not instantly. I was still a kid for the most part and I just wanted to play Melee. But I ended up making both Marth and Roy my mains, and the rest is history. After that, I’m pretty sure I did some research into the Fire Emblem series, and basically saw things that at the time was difficult for me to explain (well, I mostly saw the artwork at RPGFan. Man, I used to check that and RPGgamer out so much…). There also wasn’t much of a story out (I mean Wikipedia wasn’t created yet), but I definitely wanted to know as much as I could about the Fire Emblem series. Then of course 2003 hit and at E3 Fire Emblem was slated for a North American release. That made me happy. But it probably would have been impossible to get that game had Melee not come and introduced us to Marth and Roy.

So, a good decade and some years later, time to say thank you Melee. Not only were you a good game, but you also was the reason that everyone around the world was able to get to play Fire Emblem, and you are the reason everyone is able to enjoy what looks like will be the best selling Fire Emblem game in America. Now, if you excuse me, it’s finally time to pop that champagne and celebrate. If you haven’t already.

  1. BRING ROY BACK NINTENDO!!
Nintendo announced several months ago that they are bringing back characters from old games while adding new ones. then they said they were putting the old characters on the 3ds version and adding new ones to the Wii U version. Plus, cross platform compatibility.

    TAKE MY MONEY!

I’m excited for E3 announcements and trailers.

    • Hmm. I actually forgot about that lol But I wonder when Nintendo says old characters, I wonder if they mean from their different franchises. But the cross platform idea sounds pretty cool though.

…also, I’m probably the only one who doesn’t care if Roy comes back for the next Smash. If he does, great. Otherwise, meh.

      • Them fightin’ words, kiddo. Jk lol.
Yeah I guess I can see where you’re coming from. Roy wasn’t as popular as Marth. However, I like being different. So I can’t give a care about Marth. He’s great but he’s too popular for me. That’s why I like Lucina better than Chrom. She’s scared by war and he’s living life on a throne.

        • Well, it’s not just that — Roy’s only appeared in one game (well, ok two if you want to be technical) in the FE franchise, and well, Marth has appeared in four (and they were mostly remakes!). But then again, I don’t think I’ll care for seeing Marth either, but in general, seeing Roy again wouldn’t be a problem, but I just can’t see myself caring for it now 😀

I like Lucina better than Chrom

Beaten by his own daughter from the future. Chrom, you have fallen so low lol

  2. I hope they add Chrom and Lucina to the next Super Smash Bros. game.

Melee introduced me to Fire Emblem as well. Of course, Awakening was the first one I played. 😀

    • you’re kidding yourself if you think more than a hand full of people played advanced wars. don’t get me wrong, I’ve never played advanced wars so I have no right to judge. but I only know one of my friends that played Advanced Wars

      • Same here. It still sold enough to get more adaptations of it (oh, and it was another reason Fire Emblem came to the US), though I wonder if it screwed itself over with the Gamecube adaptation Battalion Wars.

…Oh right, I brought that game for cheap. Maybe I should go play it one of these days lol

        • lol
I have trouble with backwards play. because ive played Awakening I cant go back and play one of the older games. it doesn’t feel right. ive cursed myself in that respect.

          • That’s a shame, while the other games have different gameplay for sure, some inferior, some equal, all technologically inferior for sure –some of the stories are much better. I hope you manage to do so in the future.

          • So I’ve heard. I didn’t make that mistake when I played Kingdom Hearts games on the DS. Days was a mess and Coded made me angry.

        • I know seven people who’ve played Advance Wars –you really need to find more friends who play them!

I am really hoping for a new AW game, though. Maybe after a new WarioWare game. That’d be awesome.

  3. I’m a huge advocate for a Majora’s Mask remake on 3DS –but I’d prefer a new FE game over a remake, and preferably one that has a better story and a few fixed tidbits of gameplay.

I have faith that whatever FE14 is going to be will be better than 13, usually their second games on consoles are superior to the first… usually…

I liked the Melee version of the theme quite a bit.
